Chimacum Workhorse Project

The Horses

John is the older (8 yrs) and somewhat bigger horse with more of a strawberry color to his mane. Jim is the younger (7 yrs) brother with a lighter mane. These two are the heart and soul of the Chimacum Workhorse Project. John stands 17.2 H and weighs about 1900 pounds. Jim is 16.2H and about 1700 pounds. They each have distinct personalities. They were trained by the Amish in Ohio and came to Chimacum in 2022.

The Humans

Teamsters Dave & Karen Seabrook (and Jeremiah too).

Dave & Karen came to the Port Townsend area via boat around 2015. Following sailing adventures on the Salish Sea they dropped anchor in Port Townsend and moved to Chimacum in 2017.

Dave worked at Vancouver (WA) Fire Dept. A career-long firefighter and paramedic he retired as a Battalion Chief in 2014. Karen was an intensive care nurse, including ten years in the Peds ICU at Emanuel in Portland, OR.

First thing they did was to convert the backyard from lawn to a 6,000 SF garden bordered by about 20 existing fruit trees. They also got involved with the community through the Master Gardeners program, they started working then managing the Swan Farm Food Bank Garden in Port Hadlock. Dave worked with the local Food System Council, Karen started working on a concept that turned into the Jefferson County Seed Library hosted at the WSU Extension in Hadlock. Grandson Jeremiah works on his reading, writing and arithmetics, and on his manure shoveling and driving skills when he comes to visit.

The Community

We consider the entire local community part of our team. It is for our community that we are making this effort. We are fortunate to enjoy the support of a small but growing cadre of supporters. Many friends have been introduced to the horses and some have been able to experience driving them.
